Suzhou (5) - The Suzhou Museum

We took a short tour to the Suzhou Museum (苏州博物馆) and the adjacent the Zhong Wang Fu - Prince Zhong's Mansion(忠王府) on 23/05. The admission was free, in conjunction of the International Museum Day celebration (18th May every year).

Suzhou Museum was completed on Oct 2006 and the design of the museum was the brainchild of the renowned professional architect I.M.Pei, who had spent his childhood days in Suzhou. The museum houses over 30000 cultural relics --- most notably for excavated artifacts, Ming and Qing Dynasty paintings and calligraphy, and ancient arts and crafts. The design of the museum is impressive and contemporary.

Zhong Wang Fu is the most complete historic architectural complex of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom that has been preserved to the present in China. In contrast to the state-of-the-art design of Suzhou Museum, the architecture in Zhong Wang Fu is the raditional and classic Chinese mansion. To preserve its historic and artistic value, there were many rounds of maintenance and restorations in the past.

The main gate for Zhong Wang Fu is now also the exit for Suzhou Museum
